It’s Kitten Season, But Don’t Forget About the Mamas

I’m Gingie. All my babies are adopted, so now I want a home and family of my own.
Roo and Wally, my babies, are in their new home. It’s my turn to find a family now.

Right now, we have one nursing mama with babies (Lil P and her Baby Peas), but we have several mamas whose kitten-raising job is finished, who are barely more than kittens themselves (ranging from less than a year old to 2 years old), who have been spayed so they’ll have no more kittens, and who are looking for their forever homes with families who will love them for the gorgeous, sweet and playful teenagers they are.

Like their assorted kittens, the mamas come in many colors. Gingie (orange) and Kanga (white and gray) are the two shown above, but we also have Patches (a tortie, about whom we’ve blogged before), Mimsy (brown tabby), Baye-Baye (black), and soon Lil P (a beautifully colored tortie, like her mama, Patches), whose new lives await them. Until they find their forever families, these mamas are charming their foster parents and patrons of the Petco store in Annandale, where they can sometimes be seen.

Patches Ready to Start Her New Life

Patches the Super-Mama
Patches the Huntress
Patches was the subject of other blog postings regarding her difficult labor and beautiful babies, so I’ll not reiterate any of that here.  Tails High is now searching for the perfect forever home for this special young cat.  A recent foster family sent the following tribute to Patches:

Patches is a sweet, cuddly kitty who will follow you around everywhere you go.  She likes to sleep on her back in the middle of whatever room you’re in. She spends a lot of time cleaning herself and is very soft, especially her belly which she will let you rub as long as you listen to her tell you about her day. Patches is very chatty and will give you updates on everything that’s going on in the house.  She also likes to give massages and is careful to never use her claws.  She
gives lots of face rubs and kisses, too.  As friendly as she is, she does not get in the way and is just as happy sitting on the floor next to you as in your lap.

Patches has had some kittens of her own and also nursed some other kittens who were getting crowded out by their bigger brothers and sisters.  She is definitely used to all the company and will call to you to let you know she wants affection.  She is ready for a forever home where she can get and give lots of love.

As an addendum, Patches’ daughter from a previous litter, Lil P,  is also now in the Tails High system, along with her babies, the Baby Peas.  They came to TH the day they were born, which is also a day when my sister was visiting me.  She lives in Colorado Springs, and when I gave her the opportunity to name the newborns, she named them after Colorado ski areas.  In about 3-4 weeks, Aspen, Cooper, Eldorado, Monarch and Sunlight will be taking the Tails High stage looking for their new families, as will Lil P.  Lil P is just like her mama, vocal and loving, and there’s every reason to believe her four daughters and one son will be equally sweet and special.

Harry the Wonderful

As another poster suggested, it’s a fantastic thing to be able to reassure people that our animals are not “on death row” and will remain safe in foster homes until they find their forever families. Some kitties are adopted so quickly that we don’t all get to meet and know them as well as the ones that, for various reasons, have been Tails High foster cats longer. These longer-term kitties know that there is nothing wrong with them, they are just waiting for the right family to love and be loved.

One such kitty is wonderful Harry. Harry was rescued as a stray kitten and raised for his first 9 months alone with his brother in a basement, so he wasn’t aware that interaction with people could be so great. When Harry got to his Tails High foster home, he was so shy that he spent most of his time under the bed. He’d come out to eat, slinking past you like a gorgeous grey panther, nervously watching to make sure you weren’t going to interrupt his meal.

Luckily for Harry, Tails High volunteers don’t give up when it comes to socializing and loving our foster cats so we can get them adopted. If you met Harry today in his foster home, you wouldn’t recognize the “absentee” cat that he once was. Instead of hiding under the bed, he loves to lay on top of it, especially if you are in it to pet him! He is still very polite, but also loves to play and interact. He’d even come over to visitors to introduce himself! He is such a lover. We all love him from seeing him at adoption events over the last few months but until you get him home, you don’t REALLY know the sweetheart he can be. His true personality comes out and you want everyone to meet THAT Harry. We know that the family that adopts him will see the wonderful Harry and will write us later, asking what took so long for someone to see how great he is, all the while happy that they got him first. :)

Rapunzel the Guard-Cat

Rapunzel

From Marie, Rapunzel’s foster mama:

Rapunzel would make the perfect companion cat. She quietly follows me around the house and watches me do chores, and loves to sit on the back of my high-back office chair and nap while I do work. She is tidy, non-destructive, and is quick to learn. One of her cutest qualities, however, comes out at night. When it is time for bed she gets very excited, purring and following me around as I shut off the lights. Then, she curls up at the end of the bed and stays there all night “guarding” me!

As a loyal and curious cat, Rapunzel needs a person she can watch over. She almost reminds me of a quieter version of a dog. She doesn’t demand a lot of attention, but just loves to be in the room with you. She’ll find a place on the couch, on the back of a chair, in a window, or somewhere up high, and doze off. If you leave the room, she moves her location as well, or will come and “check” on you! When you leave the house, she entertains herself and doesn’t seem to meow or cry. She loves to have her head scratched, and will make a sweet and loving companion for someone.

Thank you, Marie, for sharing this glowing testimonial, and for giving Rapunzel an environment where she can thrive while waiting for her forever family to meet her.

Frankie: “We are loving everything about her”

Frankie with her former foster mama. Can’t you just feel the love?

One day we took 13 cats and kittens to Waldorf Well Pet for spay/neuter and vaccinations.  When we left, we had 14 felines.  Frankie, named after Frank Sinatra because of her blue eyes, is a Siamese cat.   Because one of her eyes is a bit squinted, she’s not “perfect.”  It turns out that she has something that resembles Horner’s Syndrome, but it not actually Horner’s.  The vet advises she needs no treatment or medicine.  But because she looks like she’s got an eye problem, other rescues didn’t think they could get her adopted.  So she came home with us.  We knew TH’s adoption team would find her the perfect home in due time.  In the meantime, she’s been well-loved in a couple of foster homes.

At first, she may seem very cranky (she’s got the Siamese personality), but it only takes Frankie a few hours to settle in and let you know what a sweetie she can be.  Frankie spent some wonderful time with another TH Advocate college student, Rebecca, and her roommates.  (I hope you read Shannon’s blog posting about being a college student foster parent; it was sensational.)  Rebecca and her roommates have been wonderful foster parents for a series of fosterlings, all of whom reveled in the adoration and attention they received while with them.  Here’s what Rebecca (pictured above with Frankie) had to say about this blue-eyed sweetheart:

She is a super cuddly kitty! She wants to be on a lap every chance she gets and is pretty aggressive when it comes to making room for herself on the couch or bed. She sleeps curled up on my pillow (I am therefore pillowless) and wakes me up in the morning by headbumping me in the face. She also does this adorable thing where she lies down next to my neck and curls up with her face right at eye level. She then wraps both of her front legs around my neck and hugs me really tight. It’s absolutely precious. We are loving everything about her and I think she’ll be able to find a home really soon!  She’s so loving!

Being a Tails High Foster Mom

I was talking to my mom yesterday and she asked how the kitties were doing and I said “great, I have 2 foster kitties!” She asked if it wasn’t a lot of work and how Sebastian, my cat, was dealing with it all. It was then that I realized how much being a Tails High foster mom has enriched our lives. In addition to feeling like we are saving the lives of sweet, precious furry friends, the cat that I swore was a spoiled only child has actually become a much better pet as a result. A lot of the behavioral issues my mother sweetly reminded me about (nighttime yowling, biting, spraying) have disappeared thanks to daily play with his foster brothers/sisters. I worried at first he would be sad when they would get adopted, but he loves each one while they’re with us and accepts each new one that comes in. (The only awkward moment was the litter of orange kittens that we fostered that he told me “weren’t his”:-)) And as far as it being more work, the truth is, it’s less! They keep each other company, feed one, feed three, etc. The benefits far outweigh any extra effort. I’m so grateful to Tails High to give me the opportunity to help in such a wonderful way!
